The Complete Story

Tim Sultan was born March 18, 1971 in Tucson, Arizona.  He grew up in the historic Sam Hughes Neighborhood, played baseball at Himmel Park, attended Sam Hughes Elementary and St. Michael’s Parish Day School.  Tim graduated from Amphitheater High School, participating in the track team, swim team, and National Honor Society.  As a double major in United States History and Spanish, Tim took advantage of his years at the University of Arizona to study abroad in Guadalajara, Mexico for two summers and in Sevilla, Spain for a year.  This led to a highly competitive appointment as a State Department Intern at the American Embassy in Madrid in 1994, and bred a lifelong interest in political and diplomatic affairs.  While posted to the U.S. Embassy’s Political-Military section, Tim served a demarche (diplomatic request) from President Bill Clinton to Spain's Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez.  Tim’s presentation, in Spanish, of the U.S. position on the war in Bosnia led to a bilateral agreement for a Security Council resolution at the United Nations.

Upon return to the United States, Tim studied at Thunderbird, the world-renowned #1 ranked graduate school for international business, earning an MBA in 1996.  From there, Tim returned to Tucson to launch the Global Accounts department at AlphaGraphics Worldwide Headquarters.  During his five years at AlphaGraphics, Inc., Tim negotiated agreements with Fortune 500 companies, bringing millions of dollars to AlphaGraphics 350 small business owners.  While working at AlphaGraphics, Tim found time to work with the Tucson Committee on Foreign Relations, serve on the Board of the Primavera Foundation for the Homeless in Tucson, serve as a guest lecturer at the University of Arizona and Thunderbird, and teach martial arts at the Tucson Tae Kwon Do School

When AlphaGraphics relocated to Salt Lake City, Tim was recruited to the fast-paced world of Silicon Valley as the Director of Strategic Alliances at WhereNet Corp. At WhereNet, he managed business partnerships on three continents.  In 2002, Tim made a life-changing decision.  He left his six-figure income in the private sector to return to his passion for public service.  In college, he had volunteered as an intern in the district office of U.S. Senator Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ) and was inspired by the contributions Sen. DeConcini made to Arizona.  While in San Francisco, he served as a Congressional Aide to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).  Working for Leader Pelosi, Tim found it rewarding to help constituents with Social Security and Veteran’s issues and made the decision to dedicate himself to a life of public service.

In the Spring of 2003, Tim left Leader Pelosi’s office to attend a one-year Master’s degree program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. The prestigious Mid-Career Program is reserved for talented policy makers who have already made significant contributions to their local or world communities.  While at Harvard, Tim demonstrated leadership by organizing opportunities for students to participate in public service and was elected by the student body to serve as President of the Kennedy School Student Government.

After his 2004 Congressional campaign, Tim served as a member of Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano's Tucson staff -- posted to the Governor's Office for Children, Youth and Families.  He currently resides in Tucson where he serves as a Director at the Corporate Executive Board and as a Board Member of various community and charitable organizations.
